PROFILE
Journalist and author Andrew Sullivan, whose blog, "The Daily Dish," can now be found on The Daily Beast, is a popular source for provocative and astute political and social commentary. National Public Radio called him "one of the most widely read, influential and prolific political voices online."
Currently a contributor to Newsweek, Sullivan was one of the first journalists to experiment with blogging more than a decade ago. He writes 250 to 300 posts per week for "The Daily Dish," which includes his incisive analyis and blunt observations about international affairs, domestic politics, cultural issues, religion and faith as well as links to noteworthy reporting and commentary from other writers. Playboy ranked it #1 on its list of Top 10 Political Blogs in America, and The Week called it "a personal showcase that could only exist on the Web" where Sullivan uses "his powerful intellect and critical faculties to raise questions, examine issues, wage feuds, advance crusades, and rebut fallacies."
Prior to moving to The Daily Beast, "The Daily Dish" was found at The Atlantic, where Sullivan also served as a senior editor after working as a columnist for TIME and the Sunday Times of London. He was the youngest editor-in-chief in the history of The New Republic and was acknowledged for making the magazine more relevant to readers of his generation. He was named Editor of the Year by Adweek and received National Magazine Awards for Reporting, General Excellence and Public Interest.
In his book, The Conservative Soul: Fundamentalism, Freedom, and the Future of the Right, Sullivan argued for a conservatism based on practical restraint, individual freedom, constitutional norms and skepticism. His landmark book, Virtually Normal: An Argument About Homosexuality, was the first to advocate civil marriage rights for gay couples. It set the gay rights movement's agenda for the following decade. He also is the author of Same Sex Marriage: Pro and Con and Love Undetectable: Notes on Friendship, Sex and Survival.
Sullivan has written extensively and passionately on a wide range of topics, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, civil liberties and torture, the crisis in the Catholic Church, the upheaval in the Middle East, and the future of the media. A practicing Catholic, he has challenged the Church's position on gay life.
A graduate of Oxford and Harvard and a seasoned speaker known for his sharp debating skills, Sullivan is a regular panelist on The Chris Matthews Show and Real Time with Bill Maher and appears on many other programs, including Charlie Rose, Anderson Cooper 360° and Meet The Press.
“Andrew's presentation had the clarity, eloquence and intellectual firepower one would expect from him.”
