Established in 1972 by the National Endowment of the Humanities, the Jefferson Lecture is the federal government’s highest honor for achievement in the humanities. Her talk, “On the Road: A Search for American Character,” reflects on her unique ability to take the words of real people to create dramatic works of art. Named a MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, Smith is a playwright, professor, and actress who has appeared on Nurse Jackie and The West Wing.
