Conductor Marin Alsop: Lead, Create, Collaborate

The first woman to head a major American orchestra, Conductor Marin Alsop has led a career of firsts – as the first conductor to be named a MacArthur “Genius,” the first woman to conduct the Last Night of the Proms, and the first (and only) classical musician ever invited to the World Economic Forum.

But apart from her trailblazing work as a conductor, Alsop’s real mark on music may be her artistic leadership in her community.

“Music has the power to change lives,” Alsop says, and demonstrates this with bold initiatives such as ‘OrchKids’, a program providing music education, instruments, meals and mentorship for the youth of Baltimore, ‘The BSO Academy,’ a summer fantasy camp for adults, and the biannual ‘Rusty Musicians’ event, which gives amateurs the opportunity to play with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

A leader as devoted as she is diverse, Alsop has conducted some of the world’s major orchestras, including the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Filarmonica della Scala, Orchestre National de France, London Symphony Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra. One of Leonard Bernstein’s protégés, Alsop is central to his 100th anniversary global celebrations, opening the LSO’s tribute in 2018.
