Actor Anna Deavere Smith takes on the criminal justice system

In her new HBO Special, Notes from the field, Anna Deavere Smith takes on the “failed justice system” in America.

Based on her critically acclaimed off-Broadway show, Notes from the Field, Smith takes audiences inside the School-to-Prison Pipeline and the injustices occurring in low-income communities. Winner of an Obie Award and the 2017 Nortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show, it was named one of the Top 10 Plays of the year byTIME.

Available through HBO on February 24, Smith’s film adaptation of Notes from the Field will bring the conversation about education and mass incarceration to a younger, broader audience.

In her speaking engagements, Smith includes theatrical elements as she steps away from the podium and transforms herself into the characters she has selected for the event. Her speeches regularly explore controversial topics, such as race, healthcare, education, standing up for women and girls.

A Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright and actress, Smith is best known for her roles in Nurse Jackie; Black-ish, and The West Wing. In March 2018, she will appear in ABC’s new legal-drama For the People.
